Benigno Zaccagnini

Benigno Zaccagnini (born April 17, 1912 in Faenza , † November 5, 1989 in Ravenna ) was an Italian politician and doctor.

During the Second World War Zaccagnini was a partisan of the Resistance ; in collaboration with Arrigo Boldrini he took part in the liberation of Romagna .

Zaccagnini was one of the founders of the Democrazia Cristiana and was elected to the Constituent Assembly (1946) and to the Chamber of Deputies (1948) of the newly founded Italian Republic. He belonged to the Christian Democratic wing, which was in favor of cooperation with the left (or center-left) parties. He remained in the Chamber of Deputies until he was elected to the Senate in 1979 .

Zaccagnini was Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in 1959 under Antonio Segni and kept this office under the following government under Fernando Tambroni . In the same year (1960) he was Minister for Public Works under Amintore Fanfani .

In 1975 he was appointed Secretary General of Democrazia Cristiana. He held this post until 1980, when he was replaced by Flaminio Piccoli . In 1984 he was elected to the European Parliament .
