Benjamin Henri Isaac ( Hebrew בנימין איזק; born May 10, 1945 in Geneva ) is an Israeli ancient historian . He taught ancient history as the Fred and Helen Lessing Professor at Tel Aviv University .

Isaac studied Classical Philology at the University of Amsterdam from 1963 to 1972 . After his alias he continued his studies at Tel Aviv University (1974–1980). He received his doctorate in 1980 with a thesis on Greek settlements in Thrace before the Macedonian conquest in 341 BC. Chr.

His main research interests are the Hellenistic, Roman and early Byzantine periods, the Middle East and Palestine, and Jewish history in the Roman and Byzantine periods.

Benjamin Isaac was elected a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences in 1996 and a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2003 . In 2008 he was awarded the Israel Prize for his achievements as a historian .
