Benjamin Blumenfeld ( Russian Бениамин Маркович Блюменфельд ., Scientific transliteration Beniamin Markovič Bljumenfeľd * 24. May 1884 in Volkovysk, Governorate Suwalki , today Vawkavysk , Belarus , † 5. March 1947 in Moscow ) was a Russian / Soviet chess master and theorist.

Blumenfeld studies law in Moscow and Berlin and was one of the best Moscow players in the decade before the First World War . He celebrated his greatest success at the 4th All-Russian championship tournament in 1905/1906 in Saint Petersburg , when he and Akiba Rubinstein finished second. In 1907 he was split second at an international tournament in Moscow. In 1911 he became the master of Moscow. In 1920 Blumenfeld took part in the first championship of Soviet Russia , the All-Russian Olympiad , and finished eighth. In 1925 he shared second and third place in the Moscow championship.

Blumenfeld's theoretical work was one of the foundations of the Soviet chess school . The Blumenfeld Gambit (1. d2 – d4 Ng8 – f6 2. c2 – c4 e7 – e6 3. Ng1 – f3 c7 – c5 4. d4 – d5 b7 – b5 ) is named after him.
