Benjamin Rumsey

Benjamin Rumsey (born October 6, 1734 in Bohemia Manor , Cecil County , Maryland Province , †  March 7, 1808 in Joppa , Maryland ) was an American lawyer and politician . In 1776 and 1777 he was a delegate for Maryland to the Continental Congress .

Career

Benjamin Rumsey graduated from Princeton College , later Princeton University . After completing a law degree, he was admitted to the bar. The sources do not state whether he actually worked in this profession. Before 1768 he settled in Joppa, which remained his main residence for the rest of his life. From 1771 he sat in the colonial House of Representatives of Maryland. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. Between 1774 and 1776 he was a member of several revolutionary bodies. In 1776 and 1777 he represented Maryland in the Continental Congress. After the founding of the Maryland Court of Appeals in 1778 , Benjamin Rumsey was Chief Justice of its presiding judge. He held this office between 1778 and 1805. Then he resigned from this post. He died on March 7, 1808 in Joppa.
