Benkestok was a Norwegian noble family .

The first known man to bear the name Benkestok was Tord Benkestok (bl. 1399), who had two sons named Jon Tordsson Benkestok and Trond Tordsson Benkestok. Trond was a squire ( Norwegian : væpner ) and a member of the Imperial Council . As Reichsrat, Trond was one of those who swore their oath of allegiance to Erich III on August 22, 1440 . to Norway . A later and more important member of the family was Trond Tordsson benkestok (the younger) to Meløya , among other squire, lord and steward of Bergenhus Fortress was. His son was Jon Trondsson Benkestok zu Meløya, who took part in the homage of Christian IV to Norway in 1591 . Jon was married to a so-called unfree woman named Birgitte Nilsdotter. Therefore his children were not noble. From these descend, among other things, several northern genders .

The family owned estates in Eastern Norway ( Båhus ), Western Norway , Northern Norway , the Sheep Islands, and the Shetland Islands .
