Benneckenbeck quarry

The Benneckenbecker quarry is a former, now filled with water quarry in Magdeburg district reform .

The quarry was used to mine red sandstone . A sandstone ridge stretches below the surface of the earth from Sudenburg to Sülldorf . In the village of Benneckenbeck, which today belongs to the Magdeburg district of Ottersleben, and near Osterweddingen , the sandstone ridge is so close to the surface that it was worthwhile to quarry.

The start of degradation is unknown. However, the quarry was in operation for several centuries. In the course of time the quarry became deeper and deeper, so that a sloping plane had to be created in order to be able to transport the cut stones with horse-drawn vehicles. The inclined plane was still recognizable until the 1940s.

At the end of the 19th century the Benneckenbeck quarry was abandoned and slowly filled with water. At first, the resulting small lake was up to 20 meters deep, but then silted up heavily. Today's depth is a maximum of 2 meters.

The small lake, originally surrounded by agricultural land in the immediate vicinity, is now located in an urbanized landscape. In the first half of the 20th century, the shooting range of the small bore rifle club - Benneckenbeck was located on the east side . In the 1970s, the Magdeburger Ring city motorway was built a little to the west , which cut off Lake Benneckenbeck. Before that , the new building area Reform, designed with GDR prefabricated buildings , had arisen some distance away . In the 1990s, the large Bördepark shopping center was built south of the lake . The common toad , which originally spawned in the lake, which was also used as a fishing pond at times , no longer occurs here today, probably due to the densely built-up buildings.
