Run

Benny's run

Benny's Run arises from a pool in Shamokin Township. It flows a few hundred meters to the northeast before running through a valley in an east-northeast direction. For the next few kilometers, Benny's Run receives four unnamed watercourses from the left and one from the right. It then follows a north-northeast direction before being crossed by Pennsylvania Route 61 and reaching its confluence with Shamokin Creek, 29.29 km above its confluence.

Hydrology

Benny's Run is not classified as an impaired watercourse. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation was once granted an NPDES Clean Water Act permit to dump rainwater into the creek during construction . However, in 2005 and 2006, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection received complaints that untreated sewage was being discharged into the creek. The amount of this waste water was estimated at 45 m 3 per day.

Benny's Run has a relatively high water quality . It is not subject to the influences of mining.

geography

Benny's Run is a small and shallow watercourse in the Irish Valley. This valley runs on the north side of Little Mountain , so the stream generally follows an easterly direction.

The height of the mouth of Benny's Run is 178  m . The source height of the creek is according to the contour lines of the topographic maps of the United States Geological Survey between 840 and 860 feet (256–262 m) above sea level.

The catchment area of Benny's Run covers an area of 15.9 km 2 . It is bordered by several other drainage basins, including that of Little Shamokin Creek , Lick Run, and Lower Shamokin Creek.

Part of his run is Benny's Run accompanied by the Irish Valley Road. The land on both sides of the water is rural.

history

Benny's Run was recorded on August 2, 1979 under the identification number 1169259 for the Geographic Names Information System . The water is named after "Benny", a man who lived by the water. In addition to the writing variant Benny's Run , the stream is also known as Buddy's Run , as it is named on a map of the United States Geological Survey from 1952. But in 1969, several locals who lived here for more than 50 years said they had never heard of anyone referring to the creek as the Buddy's Run.

A T-girder bridge has been running Pennsylvania Route 61 over Benny's Run since 1947. The 15 m long structure is one and a half kilometers north of Weigh Scales. In 1967, a prestressed box girder bridge was built 1.5 km west of Weigh Scales . This has a length of 11.3 m and crosses State Route 4026, as does the box culvert built in 1996 5 km west of Weigh Scales with a length of 8.2 m.

biology
