The Benrather Straße , 1933-1945 Hermann Goering Street called, is a street in the old town center of Dusseldorf, which was created during an expansion of the city within the former fortifications. It is a west-east connection that leads from the Carlstadt district (formerly also Carlsstadt or Karlstadt) to the Stadtmitte district .

Name and location

Benrather Straße begins in the west at Maxplatz and ends in the east on the west side of Königsallee and the city moat . The Benrath Bridge with Steinstrasse continues over the latter. The name refers to the former village of Benrath , in which Elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz had a new pleasure palace built as a widow's residence for his wife, Electress Elisabeth Auguste . The southern boundary of the fortified and largely roofed Carlsplatz is on Benrather Strasse between Bilker Strasse and Hohestrasse . Other cross streets are Kasernenstrasse , Breite Strasse and the western part of Königsallee .

Infrastructure

From Maxplatz to Bilker Strasse, Benrather Strasse is a one-way street in the direction of Carlsplatz with one lane for car traffic, one lane for car parking and one lane for cyclists. The buildings erected here are rental houses and some have shops and cafés in the corner buildings on Bilker Straße and opposite the corner of Carlsplatz. From the intersection with Bilker Straße, the street is the southern boundary of Carlsplatz. On the south-west side there is a hotel in the corner house on Bilker Straße and after that there is a parking garage up to the intersection with Hohe Straße. The street has two lanes on the edge of the square for car traffic with an additional lane for turning into the parking garage.

After Hohe Strasse, the street widens into three car lanes. The western entrance to the Benrather Straße underground station is on the north side between the sidewalk and the street. From the intersection with Kasernenstraße there is also a narrow, traffic-free median strip and the eastern access for the Benrather Straße underground station. After the intersection with Breite Straße, in the middle between four car lanes, there is a median strip lined with trees up to Königsallee (west side).

There are shops and offices in the buildings on the street from Carlsplatz. Commerzbank AG is located on the south side of the street between Kasernenstrasse and Breite Strasse . The flat corner building is adorned with a distinctive rotunda above the entrance to the counter on the southeast corner of Breite Straße . On the other south side of the street as far as Königsallee there are Deutsche Bank AG buildings , with the southeast corner building also having a rotunda. Opposite on the north side between Kasernenstrasse and Breite Strasse, the new Benrather Karree was built in the early 2000s. This is followed by the building complex of the former Dresdner Bank , which was taken over by Commerzbank after 2000 and which now uses this office building as far as Königsallee .

history

To 1900

City area after the creation of Carlstadt in 1796

Already before 1785 and the beginning of the creation of the new city area "Carlstadt" under Elector Karl Theodor, old publications around 1770 reported both of a "Benrather Strassen near the Flingerthor" and of isolated stone houses with gardens and stables on this street. According to the information in the “Gülich and Bergische Nachrichten” in the 1770s, these houses were “near Flinger Straße ” and to the east in front of the fortifications and protective waters.

Corner building at Benrather Strasse 6b on Carlsplatz

A planned construction and development of a new urban area within the expanded city fortifications began in 1785 with the demolition of the old city walls and the filling of the protective waters south of Wallstrasse in front of them. Here, after 1787, the Benrather Strasse was laid out as a new street from the St, -Antonius-Kirche (later renamed Max-Kirche ) in the area of the Citadelle to the new city fortifications with their protective waters in the east of the city. From 1807 this new street was officially called Benrather Straße .

The construction of houses on the new street also began soon. Since the price of the land was cheap with one thaler per square rod, and 20 years of tax exemption for a new building was granted, there was evidence of a corner house on Benrather Strasse at the southern end of Carlsplatz as early as 1788. Furthermore, by 1791 81 buildings had already been erected in the new urban area.

Simultaneously with the construction of the buildings, new streets were laid out in the new development area, including Benrather Straße. The developed and built-up area of this street first ended in front of the area of the later Breite Straße . As can be seen from the map of 1796, only houses in the western part of the street were built from the beginning to the end of the 18th century. In the eastern part of the street in front of the city fortifications, south of the street, there was a barracks area with a military hospital and the garrison church of St. Anna . Towards the end of the 18th century and with the advanced development of the northern areas of Carlstadt, the ditch in front of the Josephus Bastion was spanned with a wooden bridge in the extension of Benrather Straße, a precursor of the later Benrather Bridge made of stones.

After 1810, when the northern part of Breite Strasse was laid out, construction began on the northeast section of Benrather Strasse up to Kanalstrasse . In 1859 the following buildings on the street could be proven: On the south side of the street from Maxplatz to Carlsplatz were houses No. 1 to 7a. From the eastern end of the square and the beginning of Hohe Straße, houses No. 9 to 17 followed up to Kasernenstraße . After the intersection, the barracks area was unchanged on the southern side of the street up to Kanalstraße. On the north side, houses No. 2 to 6 were built up to Carlsplatz. Between Bilker Strasse and Hohe Strasse, the buildings with house numbers 8 to 12 belonged to Carlsplatz. After the intersection with Hohe Straße, buildings No. 8 to 14 followed up to Kasernenstraße, then to Breite Straße No. 16 to 22 and houses No. 24 to 30 as far as Kanalstraße. The development mainly affected apartment buildings but also buildings Factories for ovens (No. 13), pianos (No. 24) and wallpaper (No. 26) or shops for cigars (No. 10) and fruit and vegetables (No. 28) and an inn (No.! 4).

In the 1880s, as in the entire old city center, modernization of the paving and drainage was carried out on Benrather Strasse. This took place on the following dates:

  • Laying of new street paving in 1870/71.
  • Construction of new alluvial channels for the drainage of the houses and the road in 1885/86. With the construction of the new alluvial canals, the sanitary wastewater was separated and drained separately via new clay pipes.
  • In addition, a rainwater outlet channel was laid from Maxplatz to Kanalstrasse in 1887/89.

From 1900

Commerzbank, look right towards Kasernenstrasse

From the end of the 19th century, the city of Düsseldorf negotiated with the military treasury about relocating the barracks area between Kasernenstrasse and the city moat. After the contractual agreement of May 17, 1900, the city bought the site. The entire military infrastructure including the Church of St. Anna was demolished and the urban development of the area began. The south side of Benrather Strasse between Kasernenstrasse and the city moat was built after 1904. The following buildings were erected here:

  • Rheinhof Building Benrather Strasse No. 29: In 1906 a corner building was erected by the "Rheinhof-Sparfeuerversicherungsgesellschaft" at the eastern corner of Benrather Strasse No. 29 and Breite Strasse No. 20. In this building, with entrances from both sides of the street, there were the offices of the insurance company, a restaurant and the hall of the Düsseldorf stock exchange . Exchange trading was carried out in this room from 1908 onwards by the Düsseldorf Stock Exchange.
  • Building Königsallee No. 45: In 1905 a building in the neoclassical style was built by the Bergisch-Märkische Bank on Königsallee (west) and the southern corner of Benrather Straße . There was evidence of banking operations in this building from 1906. In 1914 the bank merged with Deutsche Bank.
  • Barmer-Bankverein -Building Breite Strasse No. 25: In 1911 the Barmer Bankverein, whichmergedwith Commerzbank in1932, built a new building complex for its Düsseldorf branch on the corner of Breite Strasse and Benrather Strasse. The branch opened on April 1, 1912.

In addition to the new development on the south-east side of the street, many houses from the first phase of construction were demolished and replaced by new buildings from the end of the 19th century. In 1914 the development on Benrather Strasse looked as follows:

  • Area Maxplatz to Bilker Straße: The houses on the south side No. 1 to 7 were rental houses and in building No. 7 there was an inn. Rental houses were also located on the north side with No. 2 to 6b and a butcher's shop was detectable in No. 2.
  • Carlsplatz area: The houses on the south side of Carlsplatz had the consecutive numbers 7 to 11 and were rented houses, some with shops. There was an art shop in number 10 and a carpet shop in number 11.
  • Area Hohe Strasse to Kasernenstrasse: houses with rental apartments and shops were on the south side. The following shops were detectable: a loden shop in No. 9, a carpet shop in No. 11, a shop for women's clothing in No. 13, the shop of a bread factory in No. 15 and a jam shop in No. 17. On the north side and the buildings With the numbers 8 to 14, apart from the rental apartments, there were only toy stores in number 8 and a flower shop in number 10.
  • Area Kasernenstrasse to Breite Strasse: On the south side of Benrather Strasse, as already mentioned, were the buildings of the Barmer Bankverein and the Bayrische Hypotheken und Wechselbank. Buildings 16 to 22 were on the north side.
  • The area from Breite Straße to Königsallee-West: Opposite the Bankverein Barmen, the corner building at Breite Straße No. 20, the “Rheinhof” complex, was unchanged on the south side of Benrather Straße. To the east of it stretched the building complex Königsallee No. 45. The latter was still a bank branch, which in the meantime traded under the name “Deutsche Bank”. The latter had also become the owner of the Rheinhof building. On the north side, houses No. 24 to 36 were arranged, which apart from the building on Kanalstrasse were rental houses. The Lennarts Hotel was located in the corner house No. 37 until 1935, and was converted by Josef Tigges in 1936. After the renovation, the “Tigges am Brückchen” restaurant was also opened in the building.

In 1934, Benrather Strasse was renamed Hermann-Göring-Strasse.

From 1945

Düsseldorf Eckhaus Königsallee No. 45 / Benrather Stra0e

From the Falke city map from 1949 it can be seen that in the area of the entire Benrather Straße many buildings were either badly damaged or largely destroyed in the war up to 1945. After the partially provisional restoration of the buildings, some were later demolished and replaced by new buildings. Notable new buildings were, for example:

The corner building at the beginning of Hohe Straße / Carksplatz, Postalisch Carlsplatz No. 14/15 and Benrather Straße No. 8, is the newly built “Calspplatz Carree” with various shops. Until the demolition around 2000, the building of the Bank für Gemeinwirtschaft with the number Breite Straße 13, erected after the last world war in the northeast area of Benrather Straße, was demolished along with other adjacent buildings and replaced by a current new building. This new northern building complex between Kasernenstrasse and Breite Strasse is the "Benrather Karree" built after 2000 . The large combined business and office complex was completed by September 2003. The U-shaped complex has the postal numbers Benrather Strasse 18 and 20 and extends laterally into Kasernenstrasse and Breite Strasse.

The corner building Benrather Strasse / Breite Strasse No. 20 was replaced by a new building in 1967 by Deutsche Bank. The building complex Königsallee No. 45, which extends to the corner building on Benrather Straße, was rebuilt in 1983. The building was raised by two floors and a new rotunda was built over the corner portal.

The foundations of the former tenement houses No. 12 and 14 from the 19th century were uncovered during civil engineering work for the subway construction in the Kasernenstrasse / Benrather Strasse area in 2012.

outlook

Since the beginning of 2017, the current large-scale renovation and new construction of buildings in the Karree Königsallee, Benrather Straße and Breite Straße has changed the appearance. The buildings in Königsallee No. 45 to 55 and Breite Straße No. 20 to 32 are affected. The houses at Breite Straße No. 20 to 32 were demolished in summer 2017 and will be replaced by new buildings. The already converted buildings on Königsallee are being modernized. The new Kö-Quatier is being built here, which was acquired by the American investor Hines and which is having the modernizations and new buildings carried out. (As of October 2017)

Remarks

  1. In the address book of 1927 it is stated that this forerunner was in front of the " Glacis " and that mostly gardens were laid out there.
  2. The numbering of the buildings was changed both before and after 1945 after the construction of new building complexes. The reasons for this were both the amalgamation of originally smaller properties to form larger ones, as well as the fact that in large corner buildings there were house entrances on both sides or only on one side. This particularly applies to the area between Kasernenstrasse and Stadtgraben. In 1914 the corner building of the Commerzbank at Benrather Strasse at the corner of Breite Strasse had the number Breite Strasse 25 and opposite the “Rheinhof” was the number Breite Strasse 20. In 1939, Commerzbank became number 19 with Hermann-Göring-Strasse and Deutsche Bank with Hermann -Göring-Strasse No. 29 and 31. Commerzbank is currently at Breite Strasse No. 25 by post.
