Aryan Chopra (born December 10, 2001 in New Delhi ) is an Indian chess grandmaster who is sometimes referred to as a chess child prodigy . Chopra met the FIDE norms for grandmasters at the age of 14 years, 9 months and 3 days in 2016 , making him the second youngest Indian chess player of all time to do so after Parimarjan Negi . He was officially awarded the title in 2017.

Career

Chopra started playing chess at the age of six after being temporarily unable to leave the house due to a traffic accident. His parents encouraged his chess talent and decided to let Prasenjit Dutta train him. His first chess tournament was the Delhi U-7 , which he won straight away. Then he won u. a. twice (2010, 2011) the U-10 Commonwealth Chess Championship - 2010 in New Delhi as the youngest title holder ever. At the Indian Youth Championships U11 in Ahmedabad (June 2011) he lost his first game, but then won eight games in a row and finished second. At that time, Chopra trained up to eight hours a day before each tournament with the then IM Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury (grandmaster since 2013).

At the Riga Technical University Open 2015 , Chopra was placed sixth - at 56th - while completing the third IM standard and thus achieving the title of International Master . At this tournament - in which he was unbeaten - he also met the first GM standard. With strong performances and victories against several grandmasters, he reached the second GM standard at the 35th Zalakaros Open in May 2016 . Chopra fulfilled the third and final GM norm on August 29, 2016 at the Abu Dhabi Chess Championship Masters Tournament when he defeated the Armenian grandmaster Samvel Ter-Sahakyan with black pieces in the last round . He was officially awarded the title of Grand Master by FIDE in March 2017.

The Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival 2017 ended Chopra with 6.5 of 9 points behind tournament winner Amin Bassem (Egypt) and the Englishman Nigel Short in third place. In the course of the tournament, he defeated several grandmasters and increased his Elo rating by 22 points. In the last round he achieved a remarkable victory with black stones against the Georgian grandmaster Lewan Panzulaia .
