The Benz Omnibus (1895) was the world's first internal combustion engine- powered bus . It was made by Benz & Cie. by the automobile pioneer Carl Benz and had eight seats, including the driver's seat.

History and technology

The closed carriage, in which the driver's seat was above the front axle, was a further development of the Benz patented motor vehicle Victoria from 1894 with a closed six-seater body. As with a landau , the passengers sat opposite each other in two rows. The seventh passenger sat outside next to the driver. Carl Benz developed the "Omnibus" or "Overland Omnibus" in order to sell it to operators of commercial regular services. The 5 hp engine with a displacement of 2650 cm³ (bore / stroke: 150 × 150 mm) was installed horizontally in the rear and transmitted the power to the rear axle via a two-speed belt drive and chain. The maximum speed of the bus fitted with solid rubber tires was 20 km / h. The first bus was delivered to the Netphener Omnibusgesellschaft on March 12, 1895 , the second on June 28, 1895. Two more buses went to Schild and Cie. in Vegesack and Johann Jansen in Nordenham . The purchase price was 6,000 marks .

On March 18, 1895, the Netphen bus company started a line service for a short time from Siegen via Netphen to Deuz . The bus took an hour and 20 minutes for the 15-kilometer route with five stops and an 80-meter difference in altitude. Technical difficulties and the lanes left by horse-drawn vehicles prompted the buyer to return his two buses to Carl Benz the following winter and to discontinue regular service.
