Ber is a small town and rural community in central Mali in the Timbuktu region in the county Timbuktu . The city is about 8 km north of the bank of the Niger River . Ber is about 53 km east of Timbuktu on the slope (R 32) that connects Bourem with Timbuktu. At the 2009 census , the parish had 9,536 inhabitants.

history

As a result of the coup in Mali in 2012, there was a UN blue helmets base in Ber as part of the MINUSMA mission . A suicide attack was carried out on them on August 16, 2014, in which two members of the peacekeeping forces were killed and seven more injured. In 2016, the UN base in Ber was the target of al-Qaeda attacks in the Maghreb .

Town twinning

The German city of Püttlingen has been linked to Ber since 1990 as part of a support partnership, as has the French city of Saint-Michel-sur-Orge .
