Berber (homeless person)

The word Berber is an occasionally used self-designation of a socially organized subgroup of homeless people .

Usage contexts

The term Berber is reflected in a wide variety of contexts. The Berber letters published by the homeless Hans Klunkelfuss in the late 1980s, which can be seen as the forerunners of today's street papers, can be seen in a prominent place . A more recent example is "Berber Info", an internet platform that was launched by the homeless Jürgen Schneider in 2007, which provides information for homeless people, usually contact points, emergency overnight stays, advice centers, etc. The poverty network emerged from the Berber Info in 2012 .

A Citizens for Berbers Association has been founded in Esslingen.

The Landes-Arbeits-Gemeinschaft (Landes-Arbeits-Gemeinschaft), organized by the homeless people, organizes Berber meetings every year. The 11th Berber meeting took place in 2007 in the St. Ursula Home in Offenburg, the 13th Berber meeting in Offenburg was on July 4th and 5th, 2009.

Other names

The word Sandler in Bavarian and Austrian German denotes homeless or homeless people, the ambiguous term bum is for the same group of people, according to the Duden, "casually derogatory" meant, see also homelessness .

  • The Cologne band “De Höhner” thematizes the situation of Berbers in their song “Alles verlore”.
  • "Berbersommer" is the title of a text collection published in 1992 by the authors HPKerr and Walter Wehner .
