The mountain field wasp ( Polistes biglumis ) is a hymenoptera from the family of the wasps (Vespidae).
features
The animals reach a body length of up to 16 millimeters (queen), 14 millimeters (worker) or 15 millimeters (male). Like the rest of the field wasps, they are shown in black and yellow. The drawing on the clypeus can vary. The species is very similar to the female of the petite field wasp ( Polistes bischoffi ). The Polistes helveticus, which was first described in 2014, is also similar . The mountain field wasp is a relatively large, dark-colored species, the antennae of which have the second limb ( pedicellus ) and the flagellum of both sexes dorsally black. The epicnemial suture is clearly visible in the females . The hypopygium , the hips ( coxes ) of the rear legs, and the mesoscutum are black. The sides of the propodeum are black, occasionally with a small yellow spot. In the males the cheeks are convex when seen from the dorsal side, the epicnemium and mesosternum are yellow.
Occurrence
The species is distributed in North Africa, southern and central Europe and southern Scandinavia, east to Central Asia. It colonizes south-facing habitats with favorable temperatures. The animals occur from May to September. They are widespread or often found in southern Central Europe.
Way of life
The nest is built close to the ground on stones or plant stems. The honeycomb can contain up to 100, maximum 150 cells. The cell lids are initially white, but turn black-brown after about a day.

The cuckoo wasp Polistes atrimandibulis parasitizes the species.
