Berghaus is a manufacturer of clothing and equipment for outdoor activities based in the United Kingdom .

The company was founded in 1966 by Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison in Newcastle upon Tyne . At first they imported and sold outdoor articles before starting to manufacture their own products under the name Berghaus in 1972 . The German name Berghaus was supposed to make the company appear more credible, as outdoor items from Germany and Austria dominated the market at the time.

In 1974 Berghaus managed to establish itself in the business with the Cyclops backpack . This was the first backpack to have an integrated carrying frame and is one of the few large-volume backpacks. Since the mid-1980s, Berghaus has been a supplier of special military equipment, especially large-volume backpacks, also for the German armed forces.

Berghaus was one of the European pioneers in the use of Gore-Tex in clothing. Berghaus has also been making hiking boots since 1994 . Berghaus became known through its collaboration with the well-known British mountaineers Sir Chris Bonington and Alan Hinkes . In the UK, Berghaus products have a significant share of the outdoor product market.

Berghaus has been part of the British Pentland Group , which also owns the Speedo and KangaRoos brands, since 1993 . The company's revenue increased from $ 16.2 million in 2002 to 2004 to $ 77.8 million. In 2004 Berghaus had 91 employees.
