The mountain school is a listed building complex in the town of Weißenfels in Saxony-Anhalt . In local monument list the building with the address are Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 6 below the detection number 094 09183 as a monument listed.

history

House I of the mountain school, whose name derives from the mountain location, was inaugurated as a primary school on April 11, 1899 and House II on September 16, 1899. A tower originally belonging to House II was dismantled due to the unstable hillside location. During the Second World War, it was difficult to run schools because the Wehrmacht shared the building. After the end of the war the building was declared a barracks and heavily devastated by looters . After the takeover by the Russian occupation forces, the aim was to resume school operations in the building, which was accompanied by intensive clean-up work and repairs. On October 1, 1945, school operations could be resumed.

Until 1947 boys and girls were taught separately, divided between the two houses. In the same year, the school received a film room that was used for educational films, but news reports were also shown publicly in the evenings. In the school year 1948/49 the school had reached its capacity with a total of 2,353 students in 44 classes with up to 57 students. In the following 10 years, numerous specialist rooms were built on the initiative of the teachers , such as the biology cabinet, the expanded chemistry laboratory and a workshop.

The number of students decreased over the years, so that in 1960 there were still 1,500 students divided between both houses. In 1985 the two houses were merged into one wing. In 1990, 400 students attended the school. In 1991 the building was again divided into two schools. There was a primary school in House I and a secondary school in House II . In the 1998/99 school year there were still 135 students in 9 classes. At that time, the secondary school was already closed and the students were divided between schools in the city area. Today there is still a primary school in the building, which was last renovated between 2015 and 2016.

architecture

The building complex, built in 1899 and 1904, consists of two neo-Gothic brick buildings, a main building and an auxiliary building. There was originally a steep helmet above the southern staircase of the main building, which leaned against the silhouette of the former Weißenfels castle. The rich construction details of the buildings are remarkable.
