Berlin-Totale: Mulackstraße is a documentary by the State Film Documentation at the State Film Archive of the GDR by Veronika Otten from 1979 .

action

The first glances of the camera into Mulackstrasse meet a young woman walking along a fenced property and three children on the other side of the street, each of whom has just got a large waffle with ice cream from an ice cream shop. A woman goes for a walk with her dog and the Berlin TV tower can be seen through one of the many vacant lots . The once densely built-up street consists of many fenced-in properties where, until the bombing of Berlin in World War II , there were houses whose outlines can also be seen on the firewalls of the houses that are still standing. An elderly woman looks out onto the street from a window on the upper floor of a house where the plaster has been completely damaged, while flower boxes are planted on other outside window sills to lighten the dreary picture a little. Former shops, such as a fruit and vegetable shop in the now walled-up basement and a shop for dairy products, can only be guessed from the labels that can still be read, the completely desolate facades of the houses, stretching through almost the entire Mulackstrasse. It is noticeable, however, that more cars are parked on the street than could be seen in a film about Steinstrasse from 1976. The property of a former corner house can be described as a small oasis, where a few benches and some trees invite you to linger, which is also used.

The condition of the backyards is particularly bad, as shown by the example of house number 22, whose enamelled house number has already rusted almost beyond recognition. There can be no question of plastering here anymore. The doors to the cellar entrances are rotting and look as if they haven't been moved for years, a shed in the yard is about to collapse. And yet a large part of the apartments is inhabited, even if not all, which can be seen from the defective windows. A cellar staircase looks like it hasn't been used for years, and small trees are already growing out of several cracks in the concrete floor.
