action

Before the eviction

The view goes over an old building area that only partially exists, with new buildings already in the background. The street signs point to the intersection of Marzahner Chaussee , at the corner of Straße der Befreiung , where there is a lot of car, bus and truck traffic. Here, where you have to decide whether you want to continue in the direction of Berlin-Marzahn or turn to Berlin-Weißensee , there are several apartment buildings that have to be cleared to make room for more new buildings. Most of the houses are still inhabited, while for example a liquor store in the front part of a house is already closed, there is still a women's clothing store and in the backyard there is a body shop whose employees are taking a break. In between you can see properties whose houses have already been demolished, while a sign is attached to a property with a garden shed that it will not be cleared for the time being in order to deter possible thieves. Life is normal on other farms, laundry is hung up, the lawn is mowed and children play.

Tenants' meeting

An information event is being held in a newly constructed building for citizens who will have to expect an evacuation in the near future. The event will be led by a member of the SED Comrade Hahn, head of the relocation and evacuation group at the Berlin-Lichtenberg District Council , Housing Policy Department and an employee who will be the contact person for those affected. It begins with a reminder that the aim of the SED is to have solved the housing problem in the GDR by 1990 . Therefore, the tenants present here have to create space for new houses. The meeting takes place in a calm and businesslike atmosphere and almost all questions asked can be answered. Even the owner of an apartment building goes home satisfied when he is told that he does not have to worry about any problems that may arise when his tenants move. The wish of an old lady not to move into a new apartment but to get a place in a nursing home straight away will also be clarified. Before the event, the attendees were given an apartment application, which they should submit with their wishes and ideas regarding apartment size, old or new apartment and many other questions in order to be able to act in their interests as far as possible.

The move

For some families, the day of moving has come. When asked where they are going, a young woman replies that they are moving to Marzahn. An apartment in an old building would certainly have been more spacious, but the advantages of a new apartment with district heating and hot water outweigh the advantages, as you save a lot of work. Another family lived in the side wing of one of these demolished houses since the spring of 1976 , originally in an attic apartment on the 4th floor . Last year they moved into a two-room apartment on the 1st floor and are now looking forward to moving into a three-room new-build apartment with all its advantages, since another child is planned after their daughter. Organizationally and financially, they had nothing to do with the move, only the date had to be agreed. After a short drive in the furniture transport car, they were able to move into their new home on Straße der Befreiung 77 and, at the end of the shooting, they can look from the balcony onto the growing residential area.
