Berlin - corner of Bundesplatz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Berlin - corner Bundesplatz is the title of a long-term documentary film project by the Berlin filmmakers Hans-Georg Ullrich and Detlef Gumm . From 1986 to 2012, the documentary film directors followed the reality of life of the residents of a residential area on Bundesplatz in Berlin-Wilmersdorf with their cameras. Shooting started on New Year's Eve 1986/87. By 2012 - in a period of 26 years - a total of 62 films in the Berlin - corner Bundesplatz series had been made. The footage has a broadcast volume of 55 hours. This long-term observation does not classify the everyday stories found under a certain main aspect. Berlin - corner Bundesplatz documents a quarter of a century of contemporary urban history, which is shaped by the way of life of around 30 protagonists, who come from different social backgrounds.

History and production

Berlin - corner of Bundesplatz in the Bundesplatz studio on Bundesplatz

As a joint project of the WDR television game and the WDR children's program, the long-term study was shown for the first time on January 16, 1989 in the afternoon program of the ARD . Under the title: Berlin - corner Bundesplatz: People on the way to the year 2000 , the first broadcast season started in the television program. The production company Känguruh Film GmbH of the filmmakers Hans-Georg Ullrich and Detlef Gumm produced the television broadcasts from 1989 to 1999 on behalf of the WDR. The six 90-minute films The Dropout, Wilmersdorfer Witwen, The Single Parent, The Prominent Attorney, Master Baker in the Kiez and The Next Generation were intended to conclude the long-term observation. However, the original intention of accompanying people on their way into the year 2000 had to be revised due to the meanwhile historical significance of the film project, which also documents the period before and after the fall of the Wall in Berlin and the great response to the feature-length films from 1999 . Within the public television stations, the decision was made to continue the Berlin - corner Bundesplatz project under the leadership of WDR, RBB and 3sat .

This was followed by two 60-minute documentaries ( Grenzgänger und Soloisten , 2001) and in 2004 four 90 -minute films ( Children! Children !, Old Friends, Associations, Law and Order ). Detailed information on the contents of all Bundesplatz films broadcast is published in the online presentation of the Deutsche Kinemathek - Museum for Film and Television at www.berlin-ecke-bundesplatz.de. The five 90-minute Bundesplatz films from 2009 ( Mothers and Daughters, Die Aussteiger, Schön ist die Jugend ..., Die Köpcke-Gang and Der Yilmaz Clan ) were shown at the Berlinale in February 2009 in the series Berlinale goes Kiez in Cosima Filmtheater, a cinema in the immediate vicinity of the portrayed neighborhood residents on Bundesplatz, premiered before the new films were shown on television. Mothers and daughters describes the life cycles of four generations of women in a family as a seemingly eternal cycle. The dropout is a portrait of the unconventional cohabitation of Hans Ingebrand and Reimar Lenz. The youth is beautiful ... describes an arc from the life and death of Wilmersdorf's widow Berta Tomaschefski to the establishment of an outpatient care service in her former vegetable shop. In Die Köpcke-Gang , the documentary filmmakers portray the world of a bourgeois family, which in this form is gradually becoming extinct in our society. The Yilmaz clan describes the life of a typically atypical family with a Turkish migration background over several generations. At the Berlinale 2009 not only the films from the Bundesplatz could be seen, but for the first time numerous photos and documents from the last 22 years of the project were presented in an exhibition in the cinema foyer. The photographer Ingeborg Ullrich has been portraying the protagonists and the Bundesplatz with her camera since the long-term documentation began.

The quarter-century project finally came to an end with the four 90-minute films Feine Menschen, Schornsteinfegerglück, Bäckerei im Kiez and father, mother, child . Three films in this last broadcast season were also funded by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg . In 2013 , the filmmakers opened the Berlinale series with these Bundesplatz films, Berlinale goes Kiez, right on Bundesplatz in the Bundesplatz cinema. The four films were broadcast on television on 3sat, WDR and RBB. Feine Menschen accompanies the eventful life of the celebrity lawyer Ülo Salm. Schornsteinfegerglück tells the story of the life of the master chimney sweep Michael Creutz and his friend Karsten Schulze, whose life paths begin with an apprenticeship together but then split professionally. The film Bäckerei im Kiez is about the Dahms family who have run a well-respected bakery for many years. After Gerhard Dahms fell ill with throat cancer, his wife Gerda cared for him lovingly until death and tirelessly struggled through life despite the difficult life situation. Father, mother, child describes the life of the Rehbein family. Father Rehbein is a subway handler, mother Rehbein is a housewife who occasionally works as a propagandist and cares a lot about the family, son Thomas pursues his career with a few detours and finally finds his calling as a freelance photographer.

The filmmakers Hans-Georg Ullrich and Detlef Gumm opened their production archive to the public after filming and handed over their project to the Deutsche Kinemathek. There you will find further information on Berlin - corner of Bundesplatz and the entire dimension of the project as well as a permanent online exhibition of a selection of photographs by Ingeborg Ullrich of the protagonists and Bundesplatz. A complete DVD edition on Berlin - corner of Bundesplatz includes nine films and bonus material from the monumental project by documentarists Hans-Georg Ullrich and Detlef Gumm.

This monumental project, about which a book by Claudia Lenssen also reports and for which there is now a complete DVD edition, ended with the presentation at the Berlinale 2013.
