The Berliner Compagnie (BC) is an alternative touring theater from Berlin and stands in the tradition of critical, enlightenment theater with current relevance. The BC is a repertory theater and holds productions for many years for as long as required. The ensemble lives and works in Berlin, but plays almost all of its own pieces throughout the German-speaking area.

history

Since it was founded in 1981 by the actors Gerhard Fries , at that time employed at the Staatstheater Kassel , and Jean-Theo Jost ( Staatstheater Wiesbaden ), her main thematic focuses have been peace, justice, human rights.

Right from the start, BC saw itself as “activation theater” or, in the sense of Bertolt Brecht, as “practical theater”. The performances are usually connected with actions: with demonstrations, with signature and poster actions, with collections, discussions, parties.

30 theater productions were made by 2018. Since 1991 almost all plays have been staged by the director Elke Schuster. Together with the author Helma Fries , she is also the artistic director of BC.

reception

Since 1982 the BC has been playing in the Federal Republic of Germany, Austria , Switzerland , Italy , the Netherlands , Belgium , Luxembourg , Poland and the Czech Republic ; meanwhile there are over 2000 guest performances. In the work of many NGOs involved in peace, development and human rights work , the pieces of the BC have a firm place.

The BC was recognized as a non-profit in September 1992 . It is recognized by the Berlin Senate with a certificate dated October 26, 1988 as a "theater that fulfills the same tasks as federal, state, municipal or municipal theaters".

BC received (mostly multiple) project funding from the Berlin Senator for Cultural Affairs, from the EU Commission (Development Policy Directorate), from the Evangelical Development Service (EED), from the State Agency for Development Cooperation (LEZ), from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ , via InWEnt), from the Catholic Fund Cooperation One World, from the seed-fairness foundation GLS Bank , from the self-taxation campaign (ASB), from the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung as well as from the Netzwerk Selbsthilfe eV

On September 1, 2009, BC received the National Aachen Peace Prize, and a support association has existed since then.
