Bernadette Brooten

Bernadette Joan Brooten (* 1951 ) is an American Roman Catholic theologian and professor at Brandeis University .

Life

Brooten studied at the University of Portland (BA) and Harvard University , where she earned her Ph.D. received his doctorate. Semesters abroad took her to the University of Tübingen and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem .

She published a groundbreaking study on Junia (Apostle) , which is now considered one of the milestones in biblical studies and a classic in theological women's studies. From 1982 to 1985 she worked in Tübingen on the research project Woman and Christianity at the Institute for Ecumenical Research , initiated by Hans Küng and funded by the Volkswagen Foundation . After a conflict with Küng about the subject of her sub-project, she left the project in 1985; her sub-project was continued by Anne Jensen .

She subsequently taught at the Claremont Graduate University in Claremont (California) , Harvard Divinity School; In 1998 she was visiting professor with the Fulbright program at the University of Oslo . From 1997 to 2008 she was a member of the Advisory Committee for the Women's Studies in Religion Program at Harvard Divinity School.

Since 1996 she has been the Robert and Myra Kraft and Jacob Hiatt Professor of Christian Studies at Brandeis University.

Brooten is the founder and director of the Feminist Sexual Ethics Project at Brandeis University. Her research relates primarily to the New Testament and post-Biblical Judaism.
