Bernard McGinn

Bernard McGinn (born August 19, 1937 in Yonkers , New York ) is one of the most important experts in the history of Western spirituality and mysticism .

Life

McGinn received his BA (cum laude) in 1959 from St. Joseph's Seminary and College in Yonkers , New York and in 1963 his theological licentiate (cum laude) from the Gregorian in Rome, in 1970 his Ph. D. (with honors) from Brandeis University in Waltham , Massachusetts. McGinn has taught at Divinity College at the University of Chicago since 1969, where he retired in 2003. So far he has supervised 65 dissertations there.

McGinn is married to Patricia Ferris McGinn. Both have two sons, Daniel (* 1972) and John (* 1974).

In 2002 McGinn was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

McGinn's work is one of the most important contributions to the history of Western mysticism in terms of importance and scope. McGinn has presented studies on nearly every relevant classic in the history of Christian spirituality. He is the author of more than 17 books and the editor of more than 11 books. His story of mysticism, which has also been translated into German, is the standard work on the subject alongside the somewhat older depiction by Kurt Ruh .
