Bernard Pagel
Bernard Ephraim Julius Pagel (born January 4, 1930 in Berlin , † July 14, 2007 in Ringmer , East Sussex ) was a British astronomer .
biography
Pagel was born in Berlin in 1930 , the son of the medical historian Walter Pagel and his wife Magda. In 1933 the family left National Socialist Germany and moved to England.
Pagel studied physics at Cambridge University and received his doctorate in 1955 . He worked long as an astronomer at the Royal Greenwich Observatory and at the same time as a professor at the University of Sussex . After his retirement he went to Nordita in Copenhagen and later again to the University of Sussex.
Pagel dealt with the origin of the elements and the development of their abundance in the universe. He did fundamental work on the abundance of elements in stars, gas nebulae and galaxies.
Pagel and his wife Annabel have three children. He died in 2007 of complications from cancer.
