Bernat Martorell or Spanish Bernardo Martorell (* between 1390 and 1400 in Sant Celoni near Barcelona , † 1453 in Barcelona) was a Catalan painter and book illustrator in the early Renaissance . He ran a highly creative, well-used artist's workshop with numerous assistants and students, including Jaume Huguet between 1436 and 1440 . In the history of art he “operated” for a long time under the emergency name “Master of Saint George” . There are panels of the altarpiece of Saint George referred to in the name in the Art Institute in Chicago and in the Louvre in Paris. After documents could prove that Martorell had created the altar of the Pubol Church in Girona, the emergency name "Master of Saint George" could be clearly identified with Bernat Martorell.

Life

It is certain that Martorell was active in Barcelona and other Catalan cities from around 1433. His earliest important work was the altar painting of the Pubolkirche in Girona (1437).

There are still five panels of the altarpiece Battle of Saint George with the Dragon , his main work from 1425 to 1437. The central image showing the fight is in the Art Institute of Chicago . Four more panels can be seen in the Musée du Louvre in Paris .

His paintings show Flemish influence and meticulous attention to detail. They are often decorated with flowers and animals, see St. George's horse.

Martorell died at the height of his creative power. His students Miguel Nadal , Pero García de Benabarre and Pero Espartagues continued the artist workshop .
