Bernardo de la Torre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernardo de la Torre (also: della Torres ) († 1545 (?)) Was a 16th century Spanish captain in the fleet of Ruy López de Villalobos .

Presumably from the Philippines in 1543 Villalobos sent the San Juan under de la Torres back to New Spain . Since the prevailing wind conditions were unknown, nobody knew anything about the northeast trade wind , so the attempt failed. However, parts of the northern Mariana Islands ( Micronesia ) and the Ogasawara Islands were discovered. In 1545 he returned to the fleet. 1544 was because Villalobos died and Íñigo Ortiz de Retez became his successor. When the San Juan returned, he also took over the ship. He drove south, where he discovered parts of New Guinea as far as the Ninigo Group ( Melanesia ).
