Bernd Leistner (General)

Bernd Leistner (born May 3, 1943 in Lauter ) is a former officer of the National People's Army of the German Democratic Republic . Most recently he held the rank of major general .

Military career

The son of an enamel painter studied at the Institute for Teacher Training from 1959 to 1961 after attending school, which he completed with secondary school leaving certificate . He then joined the NVA on April 5, 1961, where he was initially employed as a soldier in the guard regiment of the Ministry of National Defense . In the same year Leistner became an officer student at the officers' school of the land forces. After graduation he became platoon leader in 1964, later company commander in the Motorized Rifle Regiment 24 within the 4th Motorized Rifle Division . He held this position until 1970.

Subsequently, he was successively chief of staff, battalion commander and deputy commander in Motorized Rifle Regiment 24 until 1976 . From 1976 to 1978 Leistner attended the Friedrich Engels Military Academy in Dresden . He then became head of the combat training working group of the 4th mot-rifle division . In 1979 he returned as a commander in the Mot.-Schützen-Regiment 24 . In 1982, Leistner became deputy commanding officer for training in the 4th mot rifle division . In 1984 he was assigned to the General Staff Academy in the Soviet Union . After his return, Leistner was promoted to deputy commander and chief of staff of the 4th mot-rifle division in 1986 . On September 1, 1987, Leistner became its last commander and held this post until the division was dissolved and his dismissal on October 2, 1990. Previously, on October 7, 1989 , he had been appointed major general.
