Bernd Martin (historian)

Bernd Martin (born August 8, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German historian .

Life

Bernd Martin grew up in Elsterwerda in southern Brandenburg . After elementary school, he attended the Andreanum Humanist High School in Hildesheim, where he graduated from high school in 1959. After completing his military service, he studied from 1960 to 1966 the subjects of Eastern European History, English Studies and Politics at the Philipps University of Marburg , the University of Durham ( England ) and at the Free University of Berlin . This was followed by the state examination (1966) and the doctorate (1967) for Dr. phil. in Marburg with the dissertation Germany and Japan in the Second World War .

During his time as assistant at the history seminar of the University of Freiburg (1968–1974) with Andreas Hillgruber , he completed his habilitation in 1973 with the text Peace Initiatives and Power Politics in World War II . The appointment as lecturer in 1974 and as adjunct professor in 1976 followed, in 1979 he was finally appointed C3 professor for life. In 1980/81, 1990/91 and 1999 to 2001 he was managing director of the history seminar at the University of Freiburg and visiting professor at various universities in Europe and Asia.

Bernd Martin has been married since 1968. The couple have a son and a daughter.
