Bernhard Hess

Bernhard Hess (born April 5, 1966 in Solothurn ) is a national-conservative Swiss politician. He was Central President of the Swiss Democrats and from 1999 to 2007 National Councilor . After changing parties, he has been on the board of the SVP of the city of Bern since May 2018 .

Life

Hess grew up in Langnau in the Emmental . His father Konrad Hess was a grammar school teacher for Greek and Latin and an activist of the National Action against foreign infiltration of the people and homeland , the predecessor party of the Swiss Democrats. His mother Margot fled the Königsberg area in 1945 as the daughter of Swiss abroad . Bernhard Hess completed an administration apprenticeship and then switched to banking. From 1992 he was employed full-time by the Swiss Democrats (SD), where he was Secretary of the SD / Lega dei Ticinesi Group from 1993 to 1995, from 1995 to 1999 as Group Secretary of the Democratic Group of the Federal Assembly and from 2003 to 2005 as Secretary General of the Swiss Democrats took office.

Political career

In 1988 he joined the National Action. Between 1994 and 1998 he was a city councilor in Bern. In 1998 he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern. In the Swiss parliamentary elections in 1999 , Hess was the only Swiss Democrat to be elected to the National Council, eight years later, in the 2007 elections , he and his party lost this seat.

Hess is a member of the Action for an Independent and Neutral Switzerland (AUNS), the Pro Libertate Association and the German language group . He publishes sporadically in the journal " Schweizerzeit " and in the bulletin of the PiKOM.ch association and sits on the editorial committee of the civil journal "Bern aktuell".
