biography

Nothing is known about Bernhard Magnus' family origins. He must have been born around 1745. His training as a porcelain painter took place in the Höchst Porcelain Manufactory . There he is mentioned in 1759 as a painter boy. At the time when the Frankenthal porcelain factory was taken over by Elector Karl Theodor in 1762 , he moved to Frankenthal. From 1762 to 1798 he worked as a porcelain painter in the Frankenthal porcelain factory. In 1767 Magnus married the widow of a porcelain burner in the manufactory. He was naturalized in Frankenthal around 1770. He was the godfather of children of the equally well-known Frankenthal porcelain painters Christian Winterstein and Jacob Osterspey. In addition to his main activity as a porcelain painter, he is mentioned in 1780 as a drawing master for the electoral female philanthropist in Frankenthal . In 1798 he retired and was to receive a pension of 10 florins. However, he died on March 12, 1798.

Work as a porcelain painter

Magnus was one of the most famous porcelain painters in the manufactory. It was distinguished by virtuously painted battle and genre scenes on the manufactory's dishes. As a template served as works of Philips Wouwerman and David Teniers, d. J. The adjacent images show a square plate made by the Frankenthal manufactory around 1770, painted by Bernhard Magnus with the appropriate painting template: The rural scene by Ph. Wouwerman "Le Marchand de Mitridate" (the barker). The plate is signed with B Magn in the rock base. Rural scenes painted by Magnus can be seen on a solitaire in the Historisches Museum der Pfalz in Speyer. The accompanying solitary tray shows a rural banquet in front of a tavern. Signed Magnus 1773 lower left. The painting is by David Teniers the Younger . Other pieces by him are partly drawn with BM, BM p (inxt), or Bernhard Magnus.
