Bernhard Purin (born October 6, 1963 in Bregenz ) is an Austrian cultural scientist and director of the Jewish Museum in Munich .

Career

Bernhard Purin studied empirical cultural studies and modern history in Tübingen from 1985 to 1990 . In 1990/91 he was project manager for the development of the Jewish Museum Hohenems , from 1992 to 1995 curator at the Jewish Museum Vienna , where he a. a. curated one of the first exhibitions on the problem of looted art in 1995, he took over the management of the Jewish Museum Franconia , whose two houses in Schnaittach and Fürth opened in 1996 and 1999 respectively. During his work in Fürth there were repeated disputes about the conception of the Jewish Museum Franconia. The Israelite religious communities in Nuremberg and Fürth, local historians and the then Bavarian Minister of the Interior Günther Beckstein repeatedly called for Purin to be recalled. The controversy reached a climax with the dispute over the satirical exhibition Feinkost Adam by the Berlin artist Anna Adam . In this and previous disputes, Purin was always able to assert himself against influences by invoking the independence of the conceptual representation and with the support of the professional world and the sponsorship of the museum.

In 2002, at the suggestion of Lydia Hartl, then Munich's cultural advisor , Purin was appointed founding director of the Munich Jewish Museum by the Munich City Council, which opened in 2007 on the basis of his concept. Until it opened in 2017, he was part of the concept team for the construction of the Olympic Assassination Memorial Site in Munich.

From 2001 to 2007 Purin was a board member of the Association of European Jewish Museums and has been a member of this body since 2013. He is a member of the scientific board of trustees of the Museum Alte Synagoge Erfurt and the scientific advisory board of the Jewish Culture Museum Augsburg-Swabia , the editorial board of the magazine Images. A Journal of Jewish Art and the Advisory Board of the Central Registry of Information on Looted Cultural Property 1933–1945 .
