Bernhard Scultetus (Schultetus, Schultze, * around 1455 in Lauenberg i. P., Lande Lauenburg and Bütow ; † July 30, 1518 in Rome ) was dean of the church in the Diocese of Warmia , treasurer of Pope Leo X at the beginning of the 16th century . and next to Alexander Scultetus and Johannes Sculteti one of three people around Nicolaus Copernicus , who bore the Latinized name Scultetus (von Schulz, Schultheiss).

Scultetus came from the Lande Lauenburg and Bütow , which at the time of its birth had also renounced the Teutonic Order and officially became part of the Royal Polish Prussia in 1466. He also called himself Cassubius (1488) and (1475) de Lovenborch Prutenus , Kaschube and Prussia from Lauenburg.

Scultetus entered the Warmia Chapter in 1498 as a result of papal intervention as the successor to Christian Tapiau, who died in 1497 . He stayed in 1499 as a representative of the Warmia Church at the Roman Curia in Rome and received the second prelature of the cathedral chapter . In a letter from October 1499, he thanked Bishop Lukas Watzenrode for his promotion, and told him about the financial needs of his nephews, the brothers Koppernigk, Andreas and Nikolaus. These were also canons of Frauenburg , but still students in Bologna. The two had asked Georg Pranghe , Lukas Watzenrode's secretary, who was in Rome at the time, for advice. Andreas wanted to go to work in Rome to solve the financial crisis. Scultetus guaranteed a four-month bank loan of 100 ducats and asked Watzenrode to transfer money to Rome to repay it. After the death of the Schleswig bishop Eggert Dürkop in 1499, Scultetus received his prebend at Lübeck Cathedral .

Scultetus stayed in Warmia for only a short time in 1501 and then lived permanently in Rome, where he was the local chaplain and chamberlain of Pope Leo X from 1513 to 1517 . He was also the clerk of the Fifth Lateran Council . The Bishop of Fossombrone, Paul von Middelburg , also communicated with Nicolaus Copernicus about the necessary calendar reform and asked him for help. In addition, he enclosed one from Bernhard Sculteti in his letter to Copernicus in 1513.

Scultetus died in Rome in 1518 at the time when Copernicus' brother Andreas died of leprosy there. He was buried in Santa Maria dell'Anima , where his tombstone attributed to Bartolomeo Lante's workshop has been preserved. The canon of Scultetus was handed over to Johannes Zimmermann (1492–1564) in 1519, a son of Gdańsk's mayor Matthias Zimmermann, and nephew of Mauritius Ferber . Scultetus had given up his Lübeck prebende as early as 1514; this received Franciscus Grambeke (Lübeck canon since 1494; † 1536).

The correspondence from and about Scultetus is discussed in the Nicolaus Copernicus Complete Edition , as he played no insignificant role in the study of the brothers.
