Johannes Sculteti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Sculteti , also Scultetus , Schultze , (* around 1450 in Königsberg ; † 1526 ) was a German clergyman, professor in Heidelberg and then canon in the Diocese of Warmia in Frauenburg . At the beginning of the 16th century he was one of three people in the circle of Nicolaus Copernicus , who had the Latinized name Scultetus (von Schulz, Schultheiss), alongside Alexander Scultetus and Bernhard Sculteti .

Life

He completed his studies at the University of Cologne around 1470 with a bachelor's and master's degree . He moved to Heidelberg University in 1474 , where he was professor and rector until 1497. Schulteti was then proposed by the German king, the later Emperor Maximilian I , for office in the Duchy of Warmia and his entry into the Warmia cathedral chapter took place (after 1492, not until 1496) around the time that Nicolaus Copernicus became canon in Frauenburg. In 1502 he was elected Archdeacon of Warmia (as the only holder of this office in Frauenburg) , proposed by Lucas Watzenrode , whom he always stood by. After his death, in December 1512 and from 1519 to 1521, already at an advanced age, Sculteti, who was valued as an envoy, was on various missions on behalf of the Warmian bishop Fabian von Lossainen . During the equestrian war he stayed in Elbing from 1520/21 , where he was considered the head of the Warmia cathedral chapter and the most important person on the intellectual and humanist scene in Prussia. Copernicus was one of the few confidants within the chapter to whom he felt a similarly selfless commitment to the common good. As ambassadors, Copernicus and Sculteti had to request safe conduct from Hochmeister every time.

Correspondence from and about Sculteti is discussed in the Nicolaus Copernicus Complete Edition . One of them is a Latin letter to Copernicus from 1521, interspersed with German quotations. The Canon Balthasar Stockfisch who had kept the seal and various papers of the chapter died shortly before the letter was written . Sculteti, Copernicus and Heinrich Snellenberg were the only ones who did not flee during the equestrian war, all others fled to Danzig. Sculteti, Copernicus and the bishop agreed to undertake the defense of the Allenstein Castle themselves (without foreign troops) and Sculteti obtained hook boxes from Elbing.

His poetic work is lost, it was considered good. After his death in 1526, Felix Reich succeeded him as the Warmian Canon on October 26th .
