Bernhard Westermann (born December 27, 1814 in Leipzig , † January 24, 1889 in Wiesbaden ) was a German-American publisher .

biography

Bernhard Westermann was the son of master goldsmith Heinrich Christoph Carl Westermann († 1835) and his wife, the goldsmith's daughter Josepha Karoline Westermann née Schönkopf († 1868) in Leipzig. He had a sister (Sophie Helene) and four brothers, including the later Hellenist and philologist Anton Westermann and the publisher George Westermann . On March 5, 1840, he married Johanna Wilhelmine Braasch, who was born there in Hamburg, and in 1851 he traveled with her and her three children (another daughter died one year after the birth) on behalf of his brother to New York City to find one there Founding a branch of his publishing house and making books and magazines from Germany available to German-speaking immigrants. The branch was named B. Westermann & Co. on Broadway No. Founded in 289, it separated from the regular publishing house in 1852 and was continued by him alone. The couple lived in Brooklyn and had two more children in New York, both of whom died as children.
