Bernhard of St. Gallen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernhard († June 9?) Was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Gallen from 883 to 890 .

Life

Bernhard was probably of noble origin, as the epithets 'nobilis' and 'serenissimus' in the documents suggest. In these he was mentioned several times as provost before he was elected abbot by the monks in 883. This took place in the presence of Emperor Charles III. who four years later (884) confirmed the monastery’s immunity and the right to inquisition. Charles's successor, Arnulf , was initially also favorably disposed towards the monastery. However, he deposed Bernhard when he participated in a conspiracy against him that was ended. This deposition is documented in Arnulf's documents of May 14, 890 and those of Ludwig the Child from June 24, 903. A document of May 14, 890 names him for the last time as abbot.
