Bernhard von Steinfurt

Bernhard von Steinfurt († July 24th / July 25th 1193 ) was provost in the diocese of Münster .

Life

Origin and family

As the son of Ludolf I of Steinfurt († 1147), Bernhard came from the ancient lineage of the noble lords of Steinfurt , some of whom held high spiritual offices, such as Udo von Steinfurt (Bishop of Osnabrück), Balduin von Steinfurt (Bishop of Paderborn), Lutgardis (abbess in Borghorst and Vreden) and Katharina (1391 abbess in Borghorst).

Career and work

In 1168 Bernhard succeeded the cathedral provost Hugo . In this function, responsible for asset management and the external representation of the cathedral chapter , he remained until his death. In 1188 he was also a canon in Hildesheim and two years later he and his brother Rudolf founded the Johanniterkommende Steinfurt .

Bernhard and Rudolf took part in the third crusade .

Hermann (Dompropst) (1193–1206) succeeded Bernhard as Dompropst.
