Elbe Lateral Canal near the Bernsteinsee

The Bernsteinsee is a still water in Sassenburg in the district of Gifhorn ( Lower Saxony ).

geography

The lake on the outskirts of the Stüde district was created in 1971 when the Elbe Lateral Canal was built as a quarry pond and was converted into a swimming lake . The Amber Lake is now a recreational area and holiday resort. It is about 15 kilometers from the cities of Gifhorn and Wolfsburg .

description

The 9.5 hectare large and up to 16 meters deep Bernsteinsee is located near Stüde directly on the Elbe Lateral Canal in a forest , heather and moor landscape on the eastern edge of the Great Moor . The lake has no tributaries and has a large bathing beach made of fine-grained white sand. The water quality is described as "excellent". The lake water shimmers turquoise because of the sand underground . There is a glider airfield in the vicinity of the lake . About twelve kilometers south of Gifhorn , also on the Elbe Lateral Canal, is the six times larger Tankumsee in Isenbüttel . It was also created in the course of the canal construction and also developed into a local recreation area.

Emergence

For the construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal near Stüde in 1970, amounts of sand in the order of half a million cubic meters were required to fill the six meter high canal embankments. The choice of location fell on a former sand extraction point near Stüde, where the community had been planning a bathing facility since 1969. This made it possible to plan a bathing lake with the participation of various authorities, such as the water and shipping authority and the district of Gifhorn , and there was no fallow sand extraction point. The dredging work was carried out by a dredger . That transfer did Bernstein reveal who gave the lake its name.

Holiday and recreation area

The lake was completed in the summer of 1971 and Hilfred Schönberger acquired the water and around 100 hectares of surrounding areas with pine forests in the same year. Over the years, he created a nature and holiday area that has been carefully developed by Baucon Immobilien Management GmbH from Cologne since 2009 . In addition to various overnight accommodation options, the on-site offer includes dining facilities and extensive leisure activities.
