The Tankumsee is an artificially created lake in Isenbüttel in the Gifhorn district ( Lower Saxony ) near Gifhorn . It was created around 1970 as a quarry pond during the construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal and was inaugurated as a swimming lake in 1976 . Since then, a local recreation area with holiday homes has established itself around the lake , which also established a residential area.

Surname

The term Tankum is an old field name that the agriculturally used area had before the lake area was created. It is believed that Tankum is based on the pre-Germanic language root Tank / Tang , which stands for algae mass . In the course of language development, however, this also meant bog or bog water. The word part um in Tankum could be traced back to a faded pre-Germanic word that also meant moor. Since the lake is located in the Barnbruch wetland , the name development is understandable due to its once swampy location.

Emergence

The lake was created in the early 1970s as a quarry pond in the course of the construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal. The Elbe Lateral Canal runs in the Allertal on a high dam, for which large amounts of sand were required. In 1972, various institutions and municipal authorities founded the Tankumsee planning and expansion company (today: Tankumsee Betriebsgesellschaft mbH). She acquired and developed the later recreation area. The official commissioning of the Tankumsee was on June 26, 1976.

location

The Tankumsee is located about 3.3 km northeast of the center of Isenbüttel. The lake lies on the level of the Aller - glacial valley in the middle of the wooded landscape protection area Barnbruch. The Allerkanal flows through the area and has a good network of hiking trails. The Elbe Lateral Canal runs as a dam section directly on the eastern side of the Tankumsee. On the other side of the canal, an area of water, the Kranichmoorsee , was created to protect the bird world. The Mühlenriede stream flows past the southern edge of the Tankumsee . The lake is easily accessible from the cities of Gifhorn (4 kilometers southeast), Wolfsburg (12 kilometers east) and Braunschweig (20 kilometers south).

description

The lake has the dimensions of about 800 m × 1,200 m, covers an area of about 62 ha and is up to 18 m deep. The body of water has a sandy beach of around 1,000 m in length with a "baby bay" with shallow water. There, small children can play under supervision in the water near a DLRG rescue tower. The recreation area surrounding the lake, including the holiday home area, has a size of about 222 hectares. The original holiday home colony has now developed into a regular residential area, because many of the around 200 houses have been made into main residences. The lake and the local recreation area with its offers enable a variety of leisure activities, such as fishing, bathing and swimming, mini golf, cycling, sailing, surfing, diving, tennis, hiking, barbecuing and boat trips (boat rental). In 1988 the area became the state winner in the leisure and living competition .

A similar recreational area at Bernsteinsee was created just 12 km further north in the Sassenburg district of Stüde , also as a quarry pond during the construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal.
