Site history

Name giver Bertha Krupp

At the place where the Bertha-Krupp-Realschule's schoolyard is today, a school was first mentioned in 1685, which was built on the initiative and with the consent of the Essen princess Anna Salome von Salm-Reifferscheidt . This Catholic denominational school was located at the intersection of the three former villages and today's Essen districts: Frohnhausen, Altendorf and Holsterhausen , at that time on the Nölkesbusch. It was the only school for these three still rural villages, the so-called three-peasantry. At the beginning of the 19th century, classes in this building had to be abandoned due to its disrepair. A new school building was built in 1813 not far to the south-west, where the gym of the Alfred-Krupp-Gymnasium is today. As the era of industrialization arrived, and more and more workers for the up-and-coming coal mining industry and the neighboring Krupp cast steel factory immigrated, more schools were built in the three rapidly growing settlements, which together formed the mayor's office of Altendorf from 1874 and which were incorporated into the city of Essen in 1901 were.

Today's school

The origin of today's school lies in the independent girls' secondary school on Altendorfer Straße in Essen from 1927.

In 1961 the current school building on Kerckhoffstrasse, a piece of land made available by Friedrich Krupp AG , was handed over to its intended use, initially as a girls' secondary school. So it came about that the school in the district shaped by Krupp was given the name of an important family member of the industrial family Krupp . Bertha Krupp was the first of two daughters of the former company owner Friedrich Alfred Krupp and his wife Margarethe . Bertha Krupp became the sole heir. She married Gustav von Bohlen und Halbach , who was then allowed to call himself Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach , and later became chairman of the supervisory board of Friedrich Krupp AG.
