Life

Bertha Clément was the daughter of a painter , who was heavily influenced in her childhood by her father's descriptions of his stays in southern Europe. They themselves traveled extensively, then returned to her hometown and began in the nineties of the nineteenth century to publish their own narrative works.

Bertha Clément was primarily a writer of novels and short stories for young people ; Much of her extensive work is aimed at a middle-class , female reading public and is classified as part of the so-called " Backfischliteratur ". While Clément was one of the most widely read authors of this genre up to the First World War , after 1918 she was unable to build on her successes from the imperial era .
