Bertharius of Verdun

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bertharius von Verdun ( Latin Bertarius Virdunensis , French Bertaire de Verdun ) (* approx. 875; † after 925) was a canon of a church in Verdun, which was later associated with the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Vanne in Verdun , which was founded in 952 .

Bertharius was a priest and chronicler of the diocese of Verdun . Around the year 888, the first year of Arnolf of Carinthia's rule as King of Eastern Franconia , the Verdun cathedral burned down and lost most of its books. Bertharius reconstructed the history of the Verdun bishops from what he had read and heard. In the 36th year of the term of office of Bishop Dado (term of office 880-923), i.e. in the year 915, maybe not until 916/917, the chronicle of the first 31 bishops of the diocese was written, dedicated to the bishop.

His work Excerptum domni Bertarii sacerdotis in gestis pontificum sanctae Virdunensis aecclesiae ad domnum Dadonem eiusdem sedis antistitem , published by Georg Waitz with the continuation under the title Gesta episcoporum Virdunensium , is a typical example of the historiographical genus Gesta episcoporum .

Bertharius is also known in Latin as Bertarius Virdunensis, or in French as Bertaire de Verdun and in many variations such as Bertarius sacerdos, Bertarius Decanus, Bertarius Sancti Vitoni, Bertarius Sancti Vitoni Virdunensis, Bertarius von Verdun, Bertharius, Berthar, Bertaire Chanoine, Bertaire de Saint-Vanne, Bertaire, Berthaire, Bercharius, Bercarius.
