Berthold (also Bartholomäus) Dominik Lippay (born September 21, 1864 in Turzovka , Trenčín County , then Hungary, now Slovakia; † December 17, 1919 in Vienna ) was an Austrian portrait painter .

Life

Lippay studied at the academy in Antwerp with Jean-François Portaels and in Brussels with Charles Hermans , as well as with Alexandre Cabanel in Paris . Self-employed from 1887, in August of that year he accompanied Ferdinand von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha when he took office as prince in Bulgaria. He then worked for several years in Italy, where he portrayed members of the Roman Curia and received the title of papal court painter . He died after a long and serious illness on December 17, 1919 in Vienna I, Stubenbastei 2 and was buried on December 22, 1919 in the Vienna Central Cemetery.
