Berthold Gamerith (born December 12, 1758 in Altenburg ; † August 28, 1834 in Zistersdorf ) was an Austrian Cistercian and abbot of Zwettl Abbey .

Life

Berthold Gamerith was the parish administrator of St. Wolfgang bei Weitra before he was elected abbot on October 5, 1808 and appointed on October 13 in St. Pölten . During the Napoleonic wars, the monastery was plagued several times by billeting of friends and foes, and the harvests of the Nussdorf, Gobelsburg and Zwettl wineries could not be brought in. In addition, there was the delivery of church silver in 1810, the general devaluation of money in 1811 and the expropriation of the Stifthof in Vienna in 1812. Despite the heavy burdens, Abbot Berthold paid off considerable sums for his own life. Since the expenses far exceeded the income of the monastery, administrators were finally assigned to him. In July 1828 he was deposed for poor economic management. He lived in Lilienfeld Monastery until 1833 , then in Zistersdorf, where he died in 1834.
