Alexander Alexandrovich Kaplyansky
Alexander Alexandrowitsch Kapljanski ( Russian Александр Александрович Каплянский ; born December 14, 1930 in Leningrad ) is a Russian solid-state physicist and university professor .
Life
Kapljanski studied at the Faculty of Physics at the University of Leningrad , graduating in 1953. In the subsequent aspirantur at the Physics-Technical Institute (FTI) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)) he worked at Yevgeny Fjodorowitsch Gross presented his candidate dissertation on the investigation of the linear structure of the absorption edge of semiconductors with regard to the optical excitation of the excitons , which he defended in 1957. He defended his doctoral dissertation on piezoelectric crystals in 1967, after which he received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences . He then became head of the Laboratory for Solid State Spectroscopy of the FTI and head of the branch chair of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Leningrad in the FTI.
Kapljanski discovered the optical anisotropy of cubic crystals in the area of exciton resonance as well as the splitting of the spectral lines of the exciton and the impurity transitions through a uniaxial elastic deformation. With his colleagues he investigated the ferroelasticity of the mercury halides , which represent a new group of ferroics with unique anisotropic properties.
In 1987 Kapljanski was elected Corresponding Member of the AN-SSSR. In 2003 he became a full member of RAN. He is a member of RAN's St. Petersburg Science Center . There are more than 3000 citations of his many works. Its stag index is 32.
