Ivan Alexandrovich Shcherbakov
Ivan Alexandrovich Shcherbakov ( Russian Иван Александрович Щербаков ; born April 11, 1944 in Moscow ) is a Russian solid-state physicist and university professor .
Life
Shcherbakov was the youngest son of the CPSU party functionary Alexander Sergeyevich Shcherbakov , who died a year after Shcherbakov was born. After attending Moscow Middle School No. 110 (graduation in 1961), Shcherbakov studied at the Moscow Energy Institute with graduation in 1967. He then worked first as an engineer and then as a research assistant at the Moscow Lebedev Institute of Physics (FIAN) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)). In 1971 he defended his candidate dissertation . From 1976–1977 he was visiting professor at the University of Southern California . In 1978 he defended his doctoral thesis . In 1979 he was visiting professor at the University of Hamburg .
When the Institute for General Physics (IOF) of the AN-SSSR was founded in 1982 on the basis of Department A of the Lebedev Institute in Moscow, with Alexander Mikhailovich Prokhorov as director, Shcherbakov moved to the IOF, where he became head of the laboratory and then head of department. In 1985 he was appointed professor . He heads the Chair of Laser Physics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology . In 1991 he was elected a corresponding member of the RAN. In 1998 he was elected as the successor to Alexander Michailowitsch Prokhorov as director of the IOF with re-election in 2003 and 2008. In 2011 he was elected a full member of the RAN. Since 2013 he has been the academy secretary of the department for physical sciences of the RAN as successor of Viktor Anatolyevich Matveev . Shcherbakov left the office of IOF director in 2018, whereupon Sergei Vladimirovich Garnow succeeded him.
Shcherbakov's main areas of work were laser physics, spectroscopy , non-linear optics and quantum optics . In particular, he investigated the processes of transferring the energy of electronic excitations in rare earth ion mixed crystals . The results from the spectroscopic examinations of the crystals and glasses used as laser materials were included in reference works. Based on the theoretical ideas developed, new types of solid-state lasers were realized. The aim is to transfer the developments into practical application. Shcherbakov is the author or co-author of a large number of publications. His deer index is 30.
Shcherbakov's brothers were the pilot Alexander Alexandrovich Shcherbakov and the film critic Konstantin Alexandrovich Shcherbakov .
