Yevgeny Borissowitsch Alexandrow ( Russian Евгений Борисович Александров ; born April 13, 1936 in Leningrad ) is a Soviet physicist and university professor .

Life

Alexandrow, son of the physicist Boris Petrovich Alexandrow (1898–1969) and nephew of the physicist Anatoly Petrovich Alexandrov , studied at the physics and mathematics faculty of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute with a degree in 1960.

After graduation, Alexandrov entered the Leningrad State Institute of Optics (GOI). In 1964 he defended his candidate dissertation on the interference of nondegenerate atomic energy states with coherent excitation and in 1966 his doctoral dissertation on interference phenomena in quantum transitions in a transient atomic system. He became head of the Spectroscopy Laboratory . One of his main research areas was optical pumping . He developed precision magnetometers to measure weak onesMagnetic fields and especially the earth's field , which were used in 1989 during the polar expedition SP-30 on a floating ice floe in the Arctic Ocean .

In 1979, Alexandrov became a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR). 1987–1992 he was Scientific Vice Director of the GOI. In addition to his research activities, Alexandrov taught at the University of Leningrad (1991 appointed professor). In 1992 he became an academic (Real Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)).

Alexandrow was visiting professor at the University of Freiburg (1993), Humboldt Professor at the University of Heidelberg (1994–1995) and visiting professor at the Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science at the University of California, Berkeley (2001). Since 1999 Alexandrow has also been head of the laboratory at the Joffe Institute . He is co-editor of various specialist journals.

Alexandrow is a member of the Commission against Pseudoscience and Scientific Falsification , founded by Vitaly Lasarewitsch Ginsburg in 1988 , which he took over as head after the death of its chairman Eduard Pavlovich Kruglyakov in November 2012. In 1991 he exposed the torsion field theory propagated by Soviet physicists in the 1980s for the transmission of information at faster than light speed as a fraud, which did not prevent its promotion by the Russian Ministry of Science 1992–1995 and the Russian Defense Ministry from 1996–1997. Alexandrov signed with Zhores Ivanovich Alferov , Gary Israilevich Abelew , Lew Mitrofanovich Barkow , Andrei Ivanovich Vorobyov , Vitaly Ginzburg, Sergei Georgievich Inge-Wetschtomow , Eduard Pavlovich Kruglyakov, Mikhail Vissarionovich Sadowski and Anatoly Mikhailovich Tscherepaschtschuk the open letter of 10 academics to Putin against the Clericalization of the country, which the academician Georgi Sergejewitsch Golitsyn published together with the corresponding members of the RAN Gennady Wassiljewitsch Malzew and Felix Feodossjewitsch Kuznetsov and the academics Timur Magometowitsch Enejew and Georgi Alexandrovich Savarsin in 2007.
