Georgi Sergejewitsch Golitsyn ( Russian Георгий Сергеевич Голицын ; born January 23, 1935 in Moscow ) is a Russian physicist and university professor .

Life

Golitsyn's parents were the engineer - topographer and writer Sergei Mikhailovich Golitsyn from the old princely family Golitsyn and the railroad's daughter Klavdiya Mikhailovna, born Bawykina. He had a younger brother, Mikhail. In May 1941 he came with his mother to the village of Pogost ( Vladimir Oblast ), where his father was with an exploration group , his mother now worked as a warehouse clerk and he started school in September 1942. In October 1945 he returned to Moscow with his mother and brother. After graduating from 126th Middle School in 1952 with a gold medal, he was admitted to Lomonosov University Moscow (MGU), the Moscow Nuclear Research Institute (MIFI) and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MFTI). After a conversation with Grigori Samuilowitsch Landsberg , he decided on the physics faculty of the MGU. He completed his studies with Kirill Petrowitsch Stanjukowitsch in 1958.

After graduation, Golitsyn entered the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR), founded in 1955 , where he rose to the position of head of the laboratory. In 1961 he became a candidate for physical-mathematical sciences . He studied the movement of the atmospheres of the planets of the solar system . He predicted the small temperature change and high wind speeds during the Venus day . He developed a model for studying dust storms on Mars . He showed that the Siberian forest fires in 1915 led to a global decrease in temperature.

In 1972 Golitsyn became a doctor of physical and mathematical sciences . In 1979 he became a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR. He was one of the most capable students of the institute's director Alexander Michailowitsch Obuchow . In addition to his research activities, he taught and became a professor in 1981. He is Editor-in-Chief of Springer's journal Izvestiya, Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics . In May 1983 he was one of the first to come up with a report on the climatic consequences of a nuclear war ( nuclear winter ). In 1987 he became a real member of the AN-SSSR. In 1990, after the death of the institute director Obuchow in 1989, he became his successor. In 2009 he retired. He was succeeded by Igor Ivanovich Mochow .

As a representative of the Golitsyn family, Golitsyn is chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Charitable Sisters of Saint Demetrios of Thessaloniki . With others, Golitsyn founded the Moscow branch of the Sigma Xi scientific society . Since 2000 he has been a member of the Academia Europaea . Together with the Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN) Gennady Vasilyevich Maltsev and Felix Feodossjewitsch Kuznetsov and the real members of the RAN ( academics ) Timur Magometowitsch Enejew and Georgi Alexandrovich Zavarzin stepped Golitsyn the published 2007 open letter of 10 academicians Yevgeny Borisovich Alexandrov , Zhores Ivanovich Alferov , Gary Israilevich Abelew , Lew Mitrofanovich Barkow , Andrei Ivanovich Vorobyov , Vitaly Ginzburg , Sergei Georgievich Inge-Wetschtomow , Eduard Pavlovich Kruglyakov , Mikhail Vissarionovich Sadowski and Anatoly Mikhailovich Tscherepaschtschuk of Putin against the clericalism of the country produces.
