Eduard Pawlowitsch Krugljakow ( Russian Эдуард Павлович Кругляков ; born October 22, 1934 in Krasnodar ; † November 6, 2012 in Novosibirsk ) was a Russian physicist and university professor .

Life

Kruglyakov studied at the Faculty of Radiation Physics of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MFTI) with a degree in 1958. At the invitation of Gersch Izkowitsch Budker, he joined the Institute for Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Department of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (SO-AN- SSSR) in Novosibirsk - Akademgorodok . One focus of the work was the development of measurement methods for non-contact plasma diagnostics . He used lasers and optical interferometry to measure the electron temperature and density in a rapidly flowing plasma. This was the first time that plasma heating at the front of a collision-free shock wave could be measured. He was involved in the experimental determination of the dielectric strength of water , which could be increased up to five times.

In 1975 Kruglyakov defended his doctoral thesis on the confinement of a plasma in a multi-mirror magnetic field . With this he confirmed the basic ideas of Gersch Izkowitsch Budker, WW Mirnow and Dmitri Dmitrijewitsch Rjutow . He then became head of the laboratory. As a result, the GOL-1 and GOL-M experimental facilities were set up to investigate fusion by means of magnetic confinement . Krugljakov's studies of strong Langmuir turbulence in plasmas have also received a lot of attention . In 1987 he became a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR.

In 1988 Krugljakow became vice director of the Institute for Nuclear Physics, the focus of the work was on plasma physics and controlled nuclear fusion . In 1997, Kruglyakov became an academic (Real Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)). In 2005 Kruglyakov retired and became a consultant to RAN. He headed the chair of plasma physics at the Novosibirsk University until his death.

Krugljakow was a member and, since 1998, head of the Commission against Pseudoscience and Scientific Falsification, founded by Vitaly Lazarevich Ginsburg in 1988 . In 1991, Commissioner Yevgeny Borisovich Alexandrov exposed the torsion field theory propagated by Soviet physicists in the 1980s for the transmission of information at faster than light speed as a fraud, which did not prevent its promotion by the Russian Ministry of Science 1992–1995 and the Russian Defense Ministry from 1996–1997. Since 2006, the Nauka publishing house has published the regular bulletin In Defense of Science under Kruglyakov's direction . After Kruglyakov's death, Yevgeny Borisovich Alexandrov took over the leadership of this commission.

Kruglyakov signed with Zhores Ivanovich Alferov , Gary Israilevich Abelew , Lew Mitrofanovich Barkow , Andrei Ivanovich Vorobyov , Vitaly Ginzburg , Sergei Georgievich Inge-Wetschtomow Yevgeny Borisovich Alexandrov, Mikhail Vissarionovich Sadowski and Anatoly Mikhailovich Tscherepaschtschuk the open letter of 10 academics to Putin against the Clericalization of the country, which the academician Georgi Sergejewitsch Golitsyn published together with the corresponding members of the RAN Gennady Wassiljewitsch Malzew and Felix Feodossjewitsch Kuznetsov and the academics Timur Magometowitsch Enejew and Georgi Alexandrovich Savarsin in 2007.

Kruglyakov was married and had two children. In the course of his working life he had received an ion dose of 200 x-rays . He died after a long illness.
