Further research focuses were the Wolf-Rayet star , black holes and later wormholes . Together with Andrei Nikolajewitsch Tichonow's Mathematician School, he worked for a long time on inverse problems in astrophysics.

In 1985 Cherepashchuk was appointed professor. In 1986 he became head of the chair for astrophysics and stellar astronomy and the astronomy department of the physics faculty at MGU. At the same time he became director of the Sternberg Institute for Astronomy , in which he heads the stellar astrophysics department. In 1993 he became the vice chairman of the astronomy department of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN).
