Dmitri Alexandrovich Varshalovich
Dmitri Alexandrowitsch Warschalowitsch ( Russian Дмитрий Александрович Варшалович ; born August 14, 1934 in Leningrad ; † April 21, 2020 in St. Petersburg ) was a Soviet or Russian astrophysicist and university teacher .
Life
Varshalovich was evacuated from besieged Leningrad in 1941 . He graduated from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Leningrad (LGU) in 1957. He then began to work as a senior laboratory assistant at the Leningrad Physics-Technical Institute (FTI).
Warschalowitsch was the first to investigate the dynamic spin alignment of atoms , ions and molecules in dilute interstellar gases . He used the results for his candidate dissertation , with which he received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences in 1968 . Together with Anatoli Nikolajewitsch Moskaljow and WK Cherssonski he wrote a fundamental monograph on the quantum theory of angular momentum . In 1976 he became a member of the International Astronomical Union . Under Warschalowitsch's direction, a large research program to study interstellar molecules and cosmic masers was carried out together with scientists from the FRG . Together with MI Djakonow he developed a first theory for modulating an electron beam by laser radiation . The inverse Cherenkov effect , which is important for the radio emission of pulsars, was also investigated for the first time .
Warschalowitsch taught alongside his research. In 1979 he became a professor at the Chair of Cosmic Research at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute , which he has headed since 2003.
In 1985, Warschalowitsch, together with SA Lewschakow, was the first to identify the absorption line of molecular hydrogen in the spectrum of a quasar , which made the great redshift clear. 1986 Warschalowitsch became head of the department for theoretical astrophysics of the FTI. In 2000, Varshalovich became a Real Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN). In 2010 he gave up the head of the department and in 2011 became chairman of the RTI's problem council for astrophysics and cosmic research. More than 200 publications bear his name.
