Sergei Nikolayevich Bagayev

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sergei Nikolajewitsch Bagajew ( Russian Сергей Николаевич Багаев ; born September 9, 1941 in Novosibirsk ) is a Russian solid-state physicist and university professor .

Life

Bagajew studied at the Novosibirsk State University (NGU) with a degree in 1964. He then worked at the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics (IRE) of the Siberian Department (SO) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences ( RAN)) in the Novosibirsk Academgorodok . There he was involved in research in the field of laser physics and the development of the first laser . He found new effects in the absorption of laser radiation in gases under low pressures . This made it possible to observe narrow spectral lines between Doppler broadened energy levels . Bagayev defended his candidate dissertation in 1975 and his doctoral dissertation in 1984 . Later he worked in the semiconductor institute of the SO of the AN-SSSR. Bagayev was elected a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR in 1990.

Together with Weniamin Pavlovich Chebotayev, Bagayev founded the Institute for Laser Physics of the SO der RAN in Akademgorodok in 1991, which Bagayev headed from 1992 to 2016. In 1994 Bagayev was elected a full member of the RAN. Bagajew's main areas of work were quantum electronics and laser spectroscopy . He developed the physical basis for the optical femtosecond clock , with which an accuracy of 10 −18 s could be achieved. A super stable frequency standard on the basis of a He - Ne / CH 4 laser was a frequency stability of 10 -15 . This enabled the Rydberg constant to be determined with record accuracy. There are more than 1000 citations of his many works. His deer index is 30.

Bagajew headed chairs at the NGU, the Novosibirsk State Technical University and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology . He became an Executive Committee member of the European Physical Society . From 2004 to 2009 he was president of the Russian company Snanije, succeeding Guri Ivanovich Martschuk . Bagayev's successor was Oleg Nikolaevich Smolin .
