Robert Arnoldowitsch Suris ( Russian Роберт Арнольдович Сурис ; born December 31, 1936 in Moscow ) is a Russian solid-state physicist and university professor .

Life

The study at the physico - chemical faculty of the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (MISIS) closed Suris in 1960 with honors. He then worked in the Moscow research institute Pulsar, founded in 1953, for electronic developments . In 1964, after defending his candidate dissertation, he received his doctorate as a candidate in physical-mathematical sciences . Suris now worked in the Research Institute for Physical Problems in Zelenograd , founded in 1964, where microelectronic developments took place.

Suris became a recognized expert in the field of solid-state nanostructure physics, semiconductor physics and solid-state electronics. He is one of the pioneers of the theory of nano- heterostructures . He developed a theory for the electrical and optical properties of semiconductors - superlattice . In 1971 he and Rudolf Kazarinov proposed the concept of the quantum cascade laser . In 1974 Suris received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences after defending his doctoral thesis .

In 1988 Suris moved to the Physikalisch-Technische Joffe-Institut (FTI) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)) in Leningrad and became head of the laboratory and then the department for physical principles of the Microelectronics.

In addition to his research activities, Suris headed the Chair of Solid State Physics at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University from 1989 to 2012 . In 1997 he was elected a corresponding member of RAN and in 2006 a full member of RAN. Since 2011 he has headed the chair for physics of the condensed state at the Academy-University of the RAN in Sankt. Petersburg , which was founded in 1997 as a branch of the FTI and is a research and study center for nanotechnology . He is the author or co-author of many publications. Its stag index is 32.

Suris was married to the daughter of the physicist Boris Nikolajewitsch Finkelstein (1902–1962).
